QUALITY, SAFE TYRE REPAIRS

It is not always necessary to replace a punctured tyre - roughly fifty per cent of all punctured tyres can actually be fixed to a perfectly safe standard. But when you suffer a puncture the first thing to cross your mind will be whether it means a new tyre.

Hero Tyre Service’s first piece of advice is that if you already have a puncture, please do not drive the vehicle any further if possible. This will nearly always make the difference between being able to fix the puncture or having to purchase a new, replacement tyre. Remembering this small piece of information before setting out in your car could save you a good few pennies in the future!

The diagram below shows clearly what areas of a tyre are safe to repair, and there are strict guidelines about what is and isn’t repairable via British Standards, all of which Hero Tyre Service Ltd strictly adheres to.

BSAU159 TYRE REPAIR OVERVIEW

This British standard provides clear guidelines about what type of damage can be repaired on a tyre, and how to go about it. Common sense always prevails, but these are guidelines that Hero Tyre Service Ltd abides by.

As the diagram above shows, if a tyre appears to conform to the our strict tests, it can be removed from the wheel for a full internal inspection. Because tyres curve away from the middle of where the tyre rolls on the road, only the central area of the tyre is repairable. It is not possible to repair sidewalls.

If the puncture is in the shoulder or side-wall of the tyre it cannot be repaired. If this is unfortunately the case, our Hero Tyre Service technician will be happy to show you, using a BSAU 159 gauge. If the tyre still appears to be repairable, we will be happy to remove any embedded objects from the rubber and perform a puncture repair. Refitting to the wheel can then take place.

British Standard BSAU159 states that tyres must be removed from wheels for thorough inspection, in order to assess their suitability for repair. BSAU159 also defines the appropriate repair materials. Please Note: The use of liquid tyre sealants does not meet the criteria stated in BSAU159 and therefore cannot be considered suitable as a permanent tyre puncture repair.
